Sinners seekers, sinners seekers........
sinners seekers follow me, a solution I will find,
for praise and thanks I'll set you free, you'll never need to
compromise.
All this time I waited for you, all these things you want me
to be.
don't get me wrong my child, I never meant to blow you mind,
tell me what it is you've done, open up your heart my son,
close your eyes I'll help you see, only here to grant you time,
I'm giving you my guarantee, cross my heart and hope to die.
This god is mine I'll give it to you,
this god is fine I'll share it with you,
this god.
I'll raise a glass to history, you'll say a prayer to god above,
I hope you all remember me, perfect light and perfect love.
All this time I waited for you, all these things you want me
to be.
Don't get me wrong my child, I never meant to blow your mind,
tell me what it is you've done, broken vow or smoking gun?
Close your eyes I'll help you see, I'm only here to grant you
time,
giving you my guarantee, cross my heart and hope to die.
This god is mine I'll give it to you, this god is fine I'll
share it with you.

Originally written about a dominatrix I knew, but then
changed around for dedication to the Jim Jones School Of God
- written before David Koresh hit the scene (Waco), but performed
in the USA with The Stranglers around that time coincidentally.
It didn't really work with the band, but there are a few versions
which I recorded, and in it's current guise appears cut up as
"Chasing Rainbows" on the "Faith?" CD.

Tragic actor kisses lover on the screen
prettiest girl I think I've ever seen
Apollo's heroes leaving footprints in the sand
looking up I think I understand
All of my life I've been sold on dreams
all of my days I've been sold on dreams
Midnight cowboy turns to face the midday sun
dreaming dreams of how the west was won
All the children standing staring one by one
I know someday their time is gonna come
All of my life I've been sold on dreams
all of my days I've been sold on dreams
all of my days all of my nights
I've been sold on dreams
Don't sleep too much
don't dream too hard
don't look too deep
don't push too far
might not come back
don't stop me now
I'm sold on dreams.
Sold on Dreams was put together in my writing partner's
bedroom actually! He and Richard (Naiff) had the very strong
basic idea and arrangement sussed along with the first verse
and a vague chorus. We then tried our trusted method of 'put
Paul in front of the mic and he'll come up with the rest', which
served us very well. We had an enviable relationship, we got
on very well together! When we had the backing track down though
we thought we were missing a great riff, so we went 'down the
pub!' On our return our guitarist, a guy called Nicky Beer (!!!!!!
Really) came up with what I think is an awesome riff and that
made the song. I did the remaining lyrics and arrangement in
about ooooo, twenty minutes??? The middle section just happened.
We were just tracking the drums which we sampled and played
along to, it was quite the obvious. We worked like this a lot,
Andy starting a song and me finishing it, they were good days
I must say and we had some cracking songs...

A man in a suit holds a gun to my head, talking in riddles
I can't hear what he's saying,
the shade of his eyes turns from blue into red, I see him shaping
words but the silence is dead,
he's got a girl on his arm a boy in his bed, one of no importance
but she's clothed and she's fed,
the beautiful children are wrapped up inside under concrete
& lead it's where they can hide.
Open the eye that never sees, open the mouth that never speaks.
You gave up the right to feel, gave up the right to breathe.
Here comes the cat with the flag in his hand, soles on his shoes
and a shirt on his back,
selling me stories of hunger and pain, but he controls the tide
and it's turning again,
he got a broken down car in a broken down dream, say's he's
going crazy but it's not what it seems,
he leads with the left and then he swings to the right but the
beautiful truth is from me you can't hide.
Open the eye that never sees, open the mouth that never speaks.
You gave up the right to feel, gave up the right to breathe.
I'll be there when reason sleeps,I'll be there.
Look when reason sleeps & I'll be there.
So throw down your gun and give up the flag, here comes the
truth with the word in my hand,
while you've got the language and you got the signs, I don't
want to walk on the edge of your knife,
pressure or pride won't hide your disease, I can smell your
blood from a mile away,
parallel lines signify your fate, you're both stuck on the same
blade.
Open the eye that never sees, open the mouth that never speaks.
You gave up the right to feel, gave up the right to breathe.
I'll be there when reason sleeps,I'll be there.
Look when reason sleeps & I'll be there.
Well the lyrics say it all really, there is not really
any ambiguity here at all. It is a song about conscience and
the lack of it,that hopefully there are enough conscientious
and 'seeing' people around to guide us on and through the darker
elements in our nature!
