Soulsec US Tour May 2009

We left london at 11 on the 17th may ....not having much idea of what was in front of us with.....haha...... ....and arrived in JFK at around 4pm amd met up with our wonderful promoter Rebecca....got the metro into town -23rd st...erm except we were the wrong end...in Queens...nuff said – so we whipped into a cab and got to our hotel and quickly ...then we dashed over town to meet and eat!! with our good friend and host for me and Andy..the legendary Neal Miller and his lovely partner Keelan and the cat.. whyd’a ...of course... Our food critic Ms Ellis began his work quickly that night with a full turkey ‘TV dinner’...serious amount of turkey my gawd...then he begins research on onion rings...er while I do my pulled pork investigation...that is a dish FYI So after a celebratory nights food and beer we slept briefly before getting our train to Boston....awesome journey....train IS the best from of transport for me........

18th may

Got to our hotel and then on to A Boston University radio show AND it was graduation day so the town was heaving.... Two shootings that night just up the road from us...had to de-tour to show.. Set up and sound-checked at the club the Middle east....... good night for us and great to be back in one of my fave US cities...

19th may

Up in the morning to an awful brekkie....got to station for train to New Haven.....nice little trip again....it is a coastal route through Rhode Island down into Connecticut .... We are picked up from the beautiful station by John....top man took us to the best pizza....shipped us wherever we wanted to go...nice one..haha....this was a wicked little bar with a fantastic audience and the owner/manager Paul really loves his music and so runs the club how he likes...top night....thanks mate..got invited to Gene Autrys museum in LA by a drunken art curator...haha excellent....ate cold pizza for mid morning feast....bit of a mistake really

20th may

up and on the train to New York.......another good little run....into the city from the sticks.......arrived at New York central and what an incredible building this is......huge marble halls and endless routes in and out...never seen it before now....got local metro to hotel and went for a stroll....the city is so much more of a friendly place then it has been...i have not been over for many years and I recommend a visit...always loved it but this time even more.... Monkey town is in an area of Brooklyn currently being gentry-fied and and although a really cool space I don’t think the venue suited our show at all.....however we met up with some old friends and ended up at the Manitoba bar owned by Handsome Dick Manitoba of the Legendary Dictators ...some lovely pix on Andys Facebook from ‘Shivers’..... Deli sandwich tonight and erm a lot of beer.....nighty night..... My pulled pork research has stopped ...phew full up or what...however Andys onion ring experiment continues...

21st may

Ugh... up up and.....not away.....have to fly to LA today so early rise.......looking forward to nights sleep at Rebeccas in Longbeach.......what a hostess too..... Arrive and greeted by real Mexican food care of Rebeccas housekeeper miss Chavez..... Our hostess has actually bought us some Fullers beer...hey hey... Paul our co-host – Rebeccas husband and awesome artist...[will put some work on site if poss] - arrives and we immediately get into the all nighter...oh well......we’re in Hollywood tomorrow so I guess we’ll have a short journey.....

22nd may

I cant remember what we did today....mmmm....ah i did get a haircut...and a ride in the batmobile..... I know we drove to Hollywood and I met up with an old family friend and that the gig was very good indeed and we were constantly asked for Soulsec tunes....wicked.....we also met up with the very keen photographer Robert Kenney who stayed with us for a while....he has syndicated all his shots...nice........

23rd may

We had a day off.....went for dinner at our hosts parents on the Longbeach port canal-way and I took us out in the family boat –cool....we also played footie and I saw a cricket match.....read that again......yep – well it was played many years ago in the states....believe it or not Lovely day....

24th may

Played the Detroit bar in Costa Mesa .....nice venue and support was excellent......two 5-piece bands - the first led by Brooks Wackerman from Bad Religion who asked to support us and the second a Killers-esque Aussie band called Youth Group - went on before us which was quite daunting bearing in mind we are one guitar and one voice....we go on at 12.30......great time actually and a really nice crowd....

25/6th may

Two days off......so.....its off to Universal studios and Santa Monica......Seal beach –and Rodeo drive [the incredibly expensive area of Hollywood] where I bump into one Lee Dixon ........what are the chances!.– get mistaken for Bowie – yawn – and pinned down for ages by weird woman...erm then on to our dinner...fish tacos..nice....all this over two days of course.....

27th may

Today we rise at 5 and drive through the desert to San Francisco....hot dry and not the Pacific Coast Highway which we never had time for.........it is great to be back in SF as it really is a wonderful place....take a stroll to fishermans wharf etc climb a few roads to the ‘twisty road’......cool views etc....its a little twisty road that attracts visitors with cameras.... Meet up with DJ Dennis the Menace for an interview and our own selection of songs for his syndicated show on KUSF ..MY ROCK NETWORK is Crystal Media Network's site. Dennis "the Menace" Scheyer programs many of the live video and audio sessions on there as well as programming the Lava, Lava Flow and Dennis The Menace music channels.– a great music lover he has also recommended the band to the legendary Bob Coburn who is renown for his current KLOS /Rockline programming......... after a great sound-check we return to the gig and during the support bands performance the sound-man falls, unconscious - and obviously off his head - from his perch and remains still on the floor....very funny....i then catch the club owner and manager helping him up telling him ..’it will all be alright.’ ...f*******g hilarious....they blamed it on a bad prawn...!!!! met up with some nice fans but the sound spoiled it for us really..not that anyone complained – good response all round from a small but noisy audience....

28th may

Drive back to San Diego....phew...stop off at family surf condo in San Clemente......sleep....more sleep - gig Brick by Brick ...an hours drive so no sound check and a bad turn out - the venue manager - a very good man - asked us not to ignore him 'next time'....'weekdays are becoming a bit quiet '....he said...so we shall indeed hit it next time and see if we can do any better then...back to condo for late night food shopping....and sleep....

29th may

up nice and early for a stroll to the beach and then a trip down the road to a gig that I played twice ewith the stranglers...the Coach house....when you play here they put your pic on the wall - so just as we were passing i thought we'd pop in and hey presto we found one of our pictures.....and it is in the gallery somewhere.....we then went on to an amazing Spanish mission...an early settlement ...one of a few left...and one -if not the - oldest buildings in California...the mission San Juan Capistrano.a beautifully preserved piece of californian life back in the day!!....also used many times for hollywood productions..... there are a couple of pics in the gallery but very evocotive place...with mission bells still hanging one can easily imagine the place surrounded by desert and there is a obviously much folklore celebrating the mission...one being that swallows regularly arrive on St Josephs day and leave on St Johns day, seven months later...the bird has become a symbol of the place and there is a swallows day paradeevery year as part of a bigger festival...apparently they have visited for centuries and started to nest in the mission after having their nests destroyed by an unsympathetic inn keeper....go to wickipedia for a really good idea of the history of it....wonderful.... we then drive to Huntingdon beach....nice place with plenty to watch incuding seals and fishermen and erm......girls......then on to dinner before our last night at the awesome Alex's Bar. in Longbeach...run by....Alex.... no soundcheck....two bands on first - the Crystals...to me a typical new york post punk 4-piece with high heeled front girl[lady]on gibson 355....F*****n noisy but cool people.....then it was the turn of a really tight 5-piece with a hint of Pixies meets They Might be Giants...good stuff....my nerves were a little jangley but after our opening two songs the crowd just loved it and didn't want us to finish...evryone got up and danced and it was a fantastic night to finish on.....sorry its all over now.....

30th may
